Detroit Tigers fans may recognize Jahmai Jones from their AL Wild Card Series performance as having become an essential member off their bench last year, yet has found it increasingly challenging to replicate those results this time around. His offensive slump continues into June leaving the team looking for new solutions.
Jones has often been used as a pinch hitter, yet has failed to have an effectful role for players like Colt Keith, Kerry Carpenter or Zach McKinstry and is thus placing additional strain on Tigers bench depth and roster flexibility. General Manager Scott Harris intended for Jones’ contributions to help create an adaptable squad but his limited contributions are showing this goal can easily slip away.
While Jones showed power and production against left-handed pitching last season, his performance in 2025 has been disappointing. His offensive output has diminished considerably, and his skill set has become more one-dimensional, now primarily valued for his pinch-running abilities rather than his bat. With the team carrying just 12 position players, finding a more reliable option is increasingly urgent.
One of the leading candidates to replace Jones is Trei Cruz, a switch-hitter known for balanced offensive splits and defensive versatility. Cruz’s ability to play center field and cover multiple positions would add valuable flexibility to the Tigers’ lineup. Though he might not dramatically outperform Jones offensively, his speed and fielding could strengthen the bench overall.
Introducing Cruz would enable the Tigers to optimize their lineup by strategically sitting players like Wenceel Pérez and Matt Vierling against right-handed starters and positioning Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter in corner outfield spots. Pérez, who excels against lefties, could effectively assume Jones’ role while also providing defensive upgrades. Additionally, Cruz offers another option at shortstop, which may influence the team’s decision regarding Zack Short and open the door to promoting promising infield prospects.
Although Cruz has recently returned from a prolonged absence in Triple-A, the focus remains on the roster flexibility he offers rather than his current batting numbers. By incorporating Cruz, the Tigers could better leverage right- and left-handed matchups, enhancing their offensive potential.
If the team opts against calling up Cruz immediately, other options include adding right-handed hitting outfielders from Triple-A such as Ben Malgeri or Corey Julks. Julks has demonstrated power and speed at the minor league level but has yet to translate that success in the majors. Malgeri, a homegrown talent, also shows promise though there are questions about his readiness to contribute consistently.
Alternatively, the Tigers might consider designating Zack Short for assignment and using Zach McKinstry as a backup shortstop. This move could create space on the roster for infielders Hao-Yu Lee or Max Anderson, each bringing a different profile—defensive prowess in Lee and power versus left-handed pitching in Anderson.
Another potential path is exploring trades for versatile right-handed hitting outfielders who can boost both offense and defense. However, mid-season trades of this nature are often difficult to execute successfully.
Jahmai Jones’ ongoing struggles not only limit his own effectiveness but also restrict the team’s options late in games. While manager AJ Hinch continues searching for ways to spark Jones’ performance, the Tigers cannot afford to wait indefinitely. Should the team decide to designate Jones for assignment, interest from other clubs may be limited, possibly resulting in Jones accepting a Triple-A assignment to work on regaining his form.
At some point, the Tigers must rethink their roster strategy, particularly regarding players not contributing as expected. Trei Cruz stands out as a promising candidate to bring versatility and balance to the bench; though some prefer leaving him in Triple-A as they regain rhythm for his return is also significant.
With their need to expand their bench becoming increasingly apparent, the Tigers must make a decisive choice on how they wish to proceed towards upgrading their roster composition.
