Boxing’s brutal realities have once again come into sharp relief. Isis Sio, 19, was hit with a 30-day suspension following being knocked unconscious with a body shot on January 30 and returned 50 days later, competing at an event in San Bernardino where something far more serious took place than anyone anticipated.
At her four-round fight scheduled for four rounds on September 22, Sio appeared to be quiet and reserved during her weigh-in day weigh-in session with Jocelyn Camarillo as scheduled by her trainer. Their trainer requested a photo as Sio stepped onto the scales in anticipation of their clash; nothing appeared out of place at that point–weight cuts often take their toll – yet her performance on fight night told another tale altogether.
The young fighter, carrying a record of 1-3, endured several body shots early in the first round. As she retreated and covered up, Camarillo seized the opportunity, landing four powerful punches to Sio’s head. The impact rendered Sio unconscious, causing her to slump forward onto the canvas. Medical personnel quickly intervened, placing her on a stretcher and rushing her to emergency care. Observers noted she was convulsing on the stretcher, underscoring the severity of her injuries.
Sio was transported to the intensive care unit of a nearby medical center, where she was placed in a medically induced coma following the knockout. Support and prayers poured in from across the boxing community, including heartfelt messages from the event organizers who expressed their hopes for her full recovery.
The renowned Wild Card Boxing Club also released a statement expressing their positive thoughts and prayers for Sio’s healing.
Jocelyn Camarillo Reacts to the Fight and Its Aftermath
Camarillo entered the fight undefeated with a 6-0 record, but had never scored a knockout before this bout. When initially asked about her win, unaware of the seriousness of Sio’s condition, she shared her happiness over the victory while also admitting to feeling some guilt. Upon learning about Sio’s critical state, Camarillo took to social media to offer prayers for her opponent’s recovery, asking for divine healing and strength.
An update provided by an individual familiar with Sio’s condition indicated that her health remained critical, which raises serious concerns over risks inherent to competitive athleticism and whether such outcomes can be avoided in future.
At present, Isis Sio remains on her journey towards recovery, with all those within boxing sending positive vibes her way in support and hope of her healing process.
