Following Wach’s performance and subsequent actions over recent days, DiBella voiced his outrage, emphasizing how veteran boxer needed protection both from industry professionals and himself.
DiBella condemned Wach’s quick return to combat so soon after suffering injuries as “grotesque”, in line with what should be acceptable behavior from any middle-aged athlete. He voiced concerns regarding lower standards within combat sports as fans and promoters alike seem unmindful of potential risky situations.
Wach, 46, had just endured seven rounds against Tyson Fury in a mostly untelevised tune-up fight in Thailand. The contest was lopsided from the start, with Fury controlling the action throughout. Wach’s corner ultimately stopped the fight before the eighth round to prevent further punishment.
Mariusz Wach Faces Six Opponents in Unusual MMA Format
Less than two weeks after his defeat, Wach signed up for an unprecedented challenge. During the Prime MMA Show 18 in Poland, he entered a cage to face the so-called “Gypsy Team,” a group of six fighters competing simultaneously under K-1 rules with MMA gloves. Two opponents fought at a time, while others rotated in and out freely.
The match was brutal. Wach was overwhelmed as his multiple adversaries pressed him relentlessly against the cage. The referee stopped the contest shortly before the end of the third round due to a severe cut below Wach’s eye.
DiBella cited his personal experience promoting fighters for inspiration for his forceful response. As an example, DiBella recounted Jermain Taylor, whose career declined following multiple knockout losses and serious injuries; when Taylor decided to continue fighting regardless, DiBella made the difficult decision not to endorse further harm by withdrawing support for him and instead made himself unavailable as an endorser for DiBella to endorse further harm by standing aside and not endorsing further risky fights.
Holding Standards for Fighter Safety
DiBella draws upon his previous experience to gauge Wach’s current situation. DiBella maintains clear standards when it comes to protecting fighters from unnecessary danger; according to DiBella, Wach’s fights fall far short of these requirements. Although no new bouts have been scheduled for Wach, Tyson Fury remains on track towards meeting Anthony Joshua later in 2018.
