Recently at San Diego’s Pechanga Arena in a WBO super featherweight championship fight between Emanuel Navarrete, 44, of Nicaragua and Philippine boxer Charly Suarez (36), of Philippines was set for an exciting Fight of the Year contender until controversy ensued from an eye cut sustained by Navarrete which abruptly stopped proceedings and led to its cancellation altogether.
Navarrete took control early, using his unique style and physicality to outmaneuver Suarez and land powerful strikes from unconventional angles – giving him an early advantage on scorecards. But gradually Suarez grew more dominant until Navarrete suffered an injury which ended the bout in round eight.
The ringside officials were initially uncertain if the cut was due to a punch or a headbutt. After further review, it appeared the injury was caused by a legitimate punch. Even so, because Navarrete was ahead when the fight was halted, he was awarded the victory by technical decision. This outcome was met with controversy, as there were reports that the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) was reviewing additional footage that might affect the fight’s result.
Andy Foster of CSAC Executive Director announced repercussions against referee Edward Collantes, suggesting he wouldn’t be assigned high-profile fights in the near future. Yet in an unexpected turn of events, Foster quickly retracts his criticism, showing greater faith in Collantes’ refereeing abilities while suggesting he will return sooner than anticipated to the ring.
Many are keenly watching developments of this incident and deliberations from boxing community concerning match’s controversial ending and referee’s involvement therein continues.
