Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol fight for undisputed light heavyweight title was one of the year 2024’s most contentious decisions, prompting much discussion from both fans and professionals alike. Beterbiev was ultimately declared winner, sparking much discourse. David Benavidez offered his unique perspective regarding this showdown.
Benavidez recently moved up from 168 and looks set to challenge for the WBC title at 175 pounds, after enjoying success there during an outstanding tenure at that weight level. While looking forward to taking his shot at it, Benavidez also keeps tabs on Beterbiev/Bivol’s potential rematch in which there may be major shifts in division dynamics that he anticipates being affected significantly.
Benavidez, boasting an undefeated record of 29-0, shared his insights on the bout with Fight Hub. He pointed out that judging the fight strictly on boxing skills, Bivol should have emerged victorious. However, considering the damage inflicted, Beterbiev landed the more impactful hits. He articulated, “To be honest with you, I think when it comes more down to boxing, I think Dmitry Bivol won that fight. When it comes to damage, Beterbiev was probably landing the harder blows.”
The Phoenix-born fighter further elaborated, suggesting that despite the outcome, he felt Bivol had done enough to secure the win. Addressing a potential rematch, Benavidez added, “If it’s the same exact fight, I see Bivol winning. But unless they rob him again, there’s really nothing you could do.”
While talks of a rematch are still in the air, Benavidez remains focused on defending his interim WBC title and potentially facing David Morrell next, aiming to make a name for himself in the new division.
David Benavidez: Aiming to Stand Out
Benavidez, unable to secure a fight with Canelo Alvarez, views a bout with the undisputed champion as his ultimate goal. In the meantime, he sees a fight with Morrell as a pivotal opportunity to distinguish himself. He expressed, “I know it’s gonna be a good fight, and I know this is gonna separate me from everybody else. I wanna solidify myself down [with] the best. So, like I said, I just wanna do it myself… If I can’t get Canelo, if I can’t get Beterbiev or Bivol, this is the next-best way.”
Benavidez has already demonstrated his talent at 175, defeating Oleksandr Gvozdyk despite some stamina concerns late. Now facing Morrell will give Benavidez another opportunity to adapt further to this weight class.
