David Benavidez recently expressed his views toward boxing icon Mike Tyson following the latter’s less-than-enthralling match against internet personality Jake Paul at Jerry World in Texas on a Friday, quickly becoming one of its least exciting bouts ever seen in boxing history. Yet still set new records as being most watched event ever in boxing history as well as breaking Canelo Alvarez gate records by selling 18 million tickets – but with significant streaming issues leading to class action lawsuit against their streaming service for breach of contract!
Benavidez gave his perspective of the fight, noting no issues with its execution but wanting no part in seeing Mike Tyson again compete. Benavidez stated his satisfaction with its outcome but expressed desire that Tyson no longer compete. Benavidez expressed hope for Tyson retiring shortly as it would provide closure on an outstanding display by Mike.
In a later discussion, Benavidez addressed questions regarding Jake Paul’s tendency to seek out opponents past their prime. He delivered a straightforward message to Tyson: “I mean, at the end of the day, you’re your own man. If you agree to the fight, you sign the contract and that’s on you.” This comment underscores Benavidez’s stance that fighters are responsible for their career choices, regardless of external opinions.
Benavidez was asked after Tyson’s controversial loss whether or not he planned on fighting Paul again to exact revenge and was quick to respond in the affirmative, not seeking any form of payback or seeking any form of payback himself; Benavidez stated his relief that Tyson wasn’t seriously hurt during their fight while also paying respect to their legacy while accepting reality of their age and legacy as boxing fighters.
David Benavidez respects Tyson’s decision to fight but hopes he retires soon, while distancing himself from any possible clash between Paul and himself and prioritizing his own career path within sport.
