Plea deal that kept Iyanna Mayweather, commonly referred to by her nickname Yaya Mayweather, out of jail may now come at great financial cost to her. Events from 2020 have come back into focus when Texas courts ordered that she must pay nearly $50 million to the victim of stabbing incident that she committed during 2019.
According to court documents, Lapattra Jacobs received 40,105,000 in compensatory damages and an additional $10 million in exemplary or punitive damages from Texas judge David L. Reaves in 2016. These include over $8 million for past medical expenses and pain and suffering as well as physical impairment, lost earning capacity and disfigurement as well as approximately $32 million of future damages in these categories.
The judge added the $10 million penalty because the court considered Mayweather’s alleged assault to be particularly serious and dangerous.
This court order stems from an attack and subsequent criminal case dating back to 2020. The incident reportedly occurred during a violent confrontation between Yaya Mayweather and Lapattra Jacobs at a Houston-area residence associated with rapper NBA YoungBoy on April 3, 2020. At the time, Mayweather, then 19, identified herself as YoungBoy’s fiancée and confronted Jacobs, who has a child with the rapper.
The dispute escalated into the kitchen where Jacobs was allegedly stabbed multiple times in the arm with two knives. She suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries that required surgery.
Mayweather was arrested the following day and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
In 2022, Floyd Mayweather’s daughter pleaded guilty to the felony charge as part of a plea agreement that spared her from prison. She received six years of deferred adjudication probation, which included conditions such as community service and contact restrictions.
Deferred adjudication in Texas allows successful completion of probation to avoid a formal conviction.
Developments in Yaya Mayweather’s Legal Situation
Lapattra Jacobs pursued a separate civil lawsuit against Mayweather and NBA YoungBoy. On May 20 of this year, a Harris County judge signed the final judgment, though it only became public months later. The court found Mayweather fully responsible for the incident and awarded Jacobs the multi-million dollar damages.
Because the assault involved intentional harm and a deadly weapon, the judge allowed exemplary damages to exceed usual statutory limits in Texas.
As a result, Mayweather faces a substantial civil judgment while still under the terms of her criminal probation.
Iyanna Mayweather is the second child of Floyd Mayweather and his former partner Melissia Brim. Born on May 20, 2000, little is publicly known about her education. Following her brother Koraun’s footsteps, she pursued music, releasing a single titled “Oh Okay” in 2018.
She began dating NBA YoungBoy in 2019. Their relationship was tumultuous but led to the birth of their son, Kentrell Gaulden Jr., in January 2021. While Yaya Mayweather has one child with YoungBoy, the rapper is father to thirteen children from various relationships.
This judgment comes at a challenging time as Floyd Mayweather himself is reportedly facing multiple legal issues. Despite being once called the richest boxer in the world, he may currently be experiencing financial difficulties.
Representatives for Iyanna Mayweather have yet to respond or indicate whether they plan on appealing the verdict.
However, this verdict offers closure in an ongoing legal matter which has captured public attention for several years.
