Cam Skattebo has always made headlines due to his fierce running style at Arizona State and recent high-profile backflip, earning both praise and criticism alike. Recently, however, Skattebo addressed any possible backlash related to these antics by publicly acknowledging them and discussing his backflip stunt with teammates from his New York Giants teammates.
“I do enjoy that part more, while less enjoying being seen as brain dead,” Skattebo commented at an event in New York. However, New Yorkers love his act so he will just continue being himself: if people say he lacks brainpower “then don’t worry; let it go! Let it go!”
Last season, during Week 8, Skattebo suffered multiple severe injuries including a fractured tibia, torn deltoid ligament, and dislocated ankle, ending his campaign early. Nonetheless, he attempted a backflip for the crowd recently, which did not go as planned. After tumbling, he quickly got back up, maintaining his energetic spirit despite the failed landing.
The stunt, however, sparked concern among fans who criticized him for risking further injury ahead of training camp. Many expressed worry about another injury-plagued season for Skattebo, especially considering his promising performance before the setback. Supporters also urged the coaching staff to intervene.
NFL analyst Lindsey Ok expressed skepticism, commenting on the situation with disapproval. Yet, Skattebo dismissed the notion that his attempt was reckless, asserting that he was “perfectly fine” and emphasizing his long history with backflips, having performed them since he was four years old.
“I will not hurt myself before the season,” Skattebo reassured his fans.
It’s important to note that he successfully executed a backflip earlier this year after hitting a home run during a celebrity softball game. However, during the recent event, the floor’s unexpected bounce contributed to the mishap.
Comparisons and Context
Professional sports have seen similar scrutiny before – in 2012 Joe Flacco faced similar ire from the Baltimore Ravens when they disciplined him for skateboarding during an important part of his season with them; nonetheless, Flacco led his team all the way to wining Super Bowl that year, showing that such measures don’t always dictate outcomes.
Looking Ahead
Skattebo remains hopeful about returning for Week 1 of the upcoming season, with coaching staff not raising any red flags about his rehabilitation or recovery process. Although he has participated limited in training camp to date, more participation should become part of his preparations as time goes on.
