DeMeco Ryans of the Houston Texans and DeMeco Ryans himself have experienced more than their fair share of challenges during August; from minor injuries and playbook adjustments, to full roster turnover resulting from player suspensions or retirement. His roster more resembles an infirmary list than ready competitors.
Brevin Jordan has since been confirmed as season-ending injury for tight end Brevin Jordan and this has only compounded concerns over their team’s readiness and depth in preparation for next year. To call it a crisis at this point would not be too outlandish.
Additionally, several other critical players have been unable to participate in recent practices due to various injuries. Notably absent were Tytus Howard, Irv Smith Jr. with a hand injury, Cam Robinson dealing with a leg issue, rookie Jaylen Reed nursing an ankle injury, and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson facing knee challenges.
The Texans had made significant changes to their offensive lineup earlier by welcoming Cam Robinson from the Jaguars, aiming to strengthen their tackle position after moving on from Laremy Tunsil. However, Robinson’s early setback has put additional pressure on the team’s offensive line, which is now operating without its expected starters.
Gardner-Johnson’s knee surgery, which requires a 6-8 week recovery period, further complicates the team’s defensive setup. In response, the Texans have been experimenting with various players to fill the void in safety positions during his absence.
The situation at the tight end position has also become dire. Irv Smith Jr.’s absence due to injury meant an increased reliance on Brevin Jordan, who was anticipated to play a larger role this season. Now, with Jordan out, the team must look to Dalton Schultz and possibly deeper down the roster or to the market to fill this critical position.
Ryans has taken an adaptive and pragmatic approach to his setbacks, emphasizing adjustments and pressing forward. Yet Brevin Jordan’s loss represents a serious blow to their offensive strategy and depth; consequently, Ryans and the coaching staff must explore all available avenues in order to compensate.
As they prepare for a new regular season, the Texans find themselves in an uncertain situation as injuries threaten their lineup and result in gaps within it. Their adaptability and depth will be put under strain early on; making the lead-up period crucially important. Ryans must focus his coaching staff in taking decisive measures as early as now in order to maintain success for Ryan’s Texans team.
