Alpine Secures Mercedes Power and Gearbox Partnership for 2026 Season

formula 1 news

Alpine has announced plans to switch engine suppliers when Formula 1’s technical regulations change in 2026, marking an innovative strategy change within Renault-affiliated team Alpine F1. Clearly highlighting an evolution in Alpine’s Formula One strategy with this move by Mercedes power units and gearboxes being installed commencing 2026. This move signals an unprecedented change for Alpine team as its predecessor Honda began using Mercedes units back then – it highlights their intention for their current strategies moving forward!

Alpine Automotives of France and Mercedes will enter a joint agreement that is expected to continue through 2030, mirroring F1 regulations. Under this arrangement Alpine will become one of Mercedes’ customers by taking advantage of engineering expertise housed at Mercedes’ F1 powertrain facility located in Brixworth UK.

Alpine’s transition to Mercedes power units follows its decision to halt development and manufacturing of F1 engines at its historic Viry-Chatillon site in France. The site has long been the cornerstone of Renault’s motorsport endeavors. With the facility set to close at the end of 2025, Alpine’s operations will then be purely based out of Enstone, UK, concluding its era as a dual-nation team.

Mercedes already partners with McLaren, Williams and Aston Martin as power unit suppliers – as well as its own works team – but with Aston Martin moving away from Mercedes engines in 2026 Alpine will step in as replacement in their lineup.

Even amid impending changes, Alpine remains committed to producing strong performances during 2024-2025 seasons. Recently, their competitive edge was displayed when they achieved two podium finishes during rain-affected Brazilian Grand Prix race – propelling Alpine from ninth position in Constructors Championship standings up to sixth with only three races left this season!
