As Formula 1 teams gear up for the 2026 season, Cadillac’s entry into Formula 1 sparks significant enthusiasm and speculation around their potential driver lineup – among which is Colton Herta who relies heavily on how well he performs during IndyCar racing for his future in Formula 1.
Herta’s Previous F1 Opportunity
Colton Herta came close to landing VCARB (formerly AlphaTauri), as Red Bull sought an interim driver to replace Pierre Gasly. Unfortunately, Herta fell short in terms of Super License points allowing Nyck de Vries the opportunity for Formula 1. Now with Cadillac’s successful F1 entry Herta has another shot at breaking into Formula 1 racing.
Mario Andretti, appointed as a director of the board, has shown significant support for Herta, citing his vast racing experience and impressive test performance at Portimao with McLaren.
Herta’s Path to F1
To qualify for Formula 1, Herta needs to reach the 40-point threshold for a Super License. Currently at 31 points, a top-four finish in this year’s IndyCar Championship could secure his eligibility. Even a fifth-place finish could bring him close, with a potential extra point from participating in a Free Practice session getting him over the line.
Herta finished 10th both seasons (2022 and 2023), so his performance at second in 2024 proves his ability to meet his F1 ambition. But attaining an F1 seat cannot be guaranteed as many factors come into play such as competition from more experienced drivers like Valtteri Bottas.
Herta needs Super License points and market value to compete in F1’s unpredictable “silly season”, yet Cadillac may still have options with different drivers available by 2025; as for now Herta remains focused on IndyCar.
