David Perron Rejoins Red Wings with Eyes on Playoff Return

Veteran forward David Perron has returned to the Detroit Red Wings, offering experience and leadership as they look for their first playoff appearance since 2010. Acquired from Ottawa shortly before NHL Trade Deadline 2026, Perron stands ready to add value to Detroit Red Wings roster.

As the 2019 Stanley Cup Champion with St. Louis Blues, Perron played an instrumental role in Ottawa Senators playoff run this spring – scoring twice against Toronto Maple Leafs during opening round action! Though Ottawa exited postseason after six games, Perron demonstrated his ability to perform under high-pressure situations with stellar play during postseason run-in.

Currently, Perron is recovering from sports hernia surgery performed in January and is not yet able to play for Detroit. General Manager Steve Yzerman has noted that Perron could be back on the ice in about two weeks, a return that has generated excitement among fans and the team alike.

Reflecting on his time with the Senators, Perron acknowledged that he never felt completely aligned with the team’s dynamic. “I’m not sure the fit was ever all that perfect for me on this team, but at the same time, they provided me with a great chance to come in and do my thing,” he shared. Despite this, after his first practice back in Detroit, he expressed appreciation for his experience in Ottawa.

“I had an enjoyable time there and enjoyed working alongside the group of guys there,” Perron noted. “Sometimes that’s just the way things turn out; no harm done here if things just didn’t click. Every day I worked my hardest but sometimes things didn’t line up so perfectly there.”

Perron’s goal in Detroit this season is to help reignite Red Wings playoff ambitions, noting the team and city push towards this goal together. “Ultimately, what you want is meaningful games with playoff atmosphere”; noting it took him several attempts before feeling at ease in that environment and encouraging other teammates in doing the same thing. He pledges his assistance as they gain this invaluable experience.
