On October 2, 2024, the Chicago Blackhawks made significant roster decisions regarding forward Frank Nazar and defenseman Kevin Korchinski being returned to their primary minor league affiliate; additionally Louis Crevier has been assigned to Rockford of the American Hockey League.
As part of their comprehensive development strategy for younger talent, the Chicago Blackhawks have implemented an exciting parallel development program by assigning 18-year-old forward AJ Spellacy, taken in the third round at this year’s NHL draft and performing admirably during training camp, to Windsor of Ontario Hockey League for further advancement.
The Journey of Frank Nazar Twenty-year-old forward Frank Nazar, selected by the Blackhawks in the first round of the 2022 draft, made an immediate impact by scoring in his first NHL game against Carolina on April 14. However, with a crowded roster this offseason, his opportunities with the main squad would be limited.
Head Coach Luke Richardson remarked on the decision, “For Frank, being the top center and getting time on both the power play and penalty kill will be invaluable, which might not be as available if he stayed with us. It’s important that he doesn’t lose development time by sitting out or playing infrequently at this stage in his career.”
Developmental Path for Kevin Korchinski Twenty-year-old defenseman Kevin Korchinski, who was the seventh overall pick in the 2022 draft, finished last season with the Blackhawks tallying five goals and 10 assists over 76 games.
“Kevin didn’t get many opportunities last season to fine-tune his game, making this an opportune time,” noted Richardson in explaining their desire for Korchinski to develop in the minors before experiencing NHL action for himself too soon.
Reducing Camp Roster These moves are part of an initiative by the Blackhawks to reduce their camp roster to 28 players – 15 forwards, nine defensemen, and four goaltenders – with plans to open their season against Utah on Tuesday evening.
