A Tribute and a Call for Support: Remembering Matt Beard

Matt Beard left an unexpected and tragic legacy when his death at 47 took everyone by surprise on September 21, 2025. Nicknamed “Beardy”, not only was Matt an influential coach of women’s soccer but was also beloved husband, father, brother and uncle to those close to him and who appreciated his work from a distance. The generosity shown by donors exceeded all expectations, with the fundraiser quickly surpassing its initial goal of £5,000, reaching over £31,517 from just 535 contributions. This overwhelming response reflects the deep respect and affection the soccer community holds for Beard and his family. Oatley, deeply moved by the outpouring of support, expressed her gratitude on social media, highlighting how the donations and kind messages were a source of comfort to Beard’s family.

Following the announcement of Beard’s passing, tributes began to flood in for the former manager of Liverpool, Burnley, and Chelsea. Oatley, among many others, shared personal memories, emphasizing Beard’s significant impact on the women’s game and his warm, approachable nature. Despite facing challenges like limited budgets, Oatley noted that Beard’s dedication never wavered, nor did his kindness and willingness to assist others.

Beard leaves behind not just his tactical prowess as evidenced by three consecutive WSL titles with Liverpool and near misses for England manager, but his genuine, caring character as well as contributions he made toward further developing women’s soccer in England.
