Andre Onana Commits to Manchester United Despite Recent Struggles

soccer news

Manchester United midfielder Andre Onana has stated his intent to remain with the team into next season despite recent struggles that have generated speculation regarding his place at United. He recently said “never give up”, signalling his intent not only remain but stay until at least 2019.

Manager Ruben Amorim may acquire new goalkeepers during this summer transfer window; however, 28-year-old Onana remains keen on continuing at Old Trafford after having moved from Inter Milan for PS47 million two years prior. With his current contract due until 2028 set until expire, Onana has appeared 86 matches since moving.

The club is reportedly seeking to strengthen its goalkeeping options, as veteran Tom Heaton might retire following the expiration of his contract in June, and backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir might leave in pursuit of more playing time. Moreover, with the Africa Cup of Nations scheduled between December 18, 2025, and January 2026, Onana’s potential involvement could leave Manchester United without their primary goalkeeper during a critical part of the season.

Onana’s performance has been under the microscope following three errors leading to goals in the current Premier League season. These mistakes came in matches against Nottingham Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Brighton, contributing to the team’s defeats.

Manchester United must ensure they secure at least PS28 million to avoid financial losses under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules should they decide to sell Onana.

Manager Ruben Amorim Defends Onana

Ruben Amorim of Manchester United defended their goalkeeper Onana against charges that they played a part in their FA Cup exit, suggesting this blame is unfairly laid at Onana’s doorstep. Amorim noted the challenges Onana encountered were part of wider team dynamics; for instance when criticizing him after conceding an own-goal against Ipswich; yet such instances can occur during game play as Amorim noted this is acceptable behavior in soccer.
