Angel City’s Coach Discusses Why Christen Press Didn’t Play in Season Opener Against San Diego

“And I couldn’t be more delighted to journey with you for another season! LFG!” Christen Press made headlines earlier this month when she expressed excitement for another season with Angel City FC after two-year hiatus due to injury, signing one-year deals was highly anticipated news; yet questions arose as one of most anticipated players during season debut; her absence caused great anticipation among her supporters.

36-year-old forward Alyson Nancoke was noticeably missing during the 2025 NWSL season opener against San Diego Wave, even though she sat on their bench. Fans held out hope she might play late but she did not appear by 90 minute completion of match.

Fans were left asking themselves why interim Angel City FC coach, Sam Laity, declined to use Press during his stint. Laity explained his decision by noting: “Christen was available…The game had become too transitional…This wasn’t necessarily Christen’s best game now because she still needed recovery time…”, as reported by Just Women’s Sports on X.

Anticipation continues to mount for the unveiling of the CP23.
