Life often throws surprises our way, including in international soccer. Take the 2024 Paris Olympic incident where a drone was discovered hovering near New Zealand’s training camp causing widespread concern – only later to discover it belonged to their group stage rival Canada! When investigations revealed this fact, their head coach Bev Priestman and two assistants were all charged with spying for New Zealand; investigations led them to being banned from all forms of competitive sporting activity for one year after they were found guilty in this espionage scandal and ultimately suspended due to being linked with Canada as being linked with New Zealand being suspended as group stage competitors Canada had been caught involved as being connected with spying them against New Zealand!
As time passed, Bev Priestman’s suspension came to an end and she resumed soccer coaching–though perhaps in ways one wouldn’t expect. Although her former role with Canada no longer holds as Casey Stoney has taken on that responsibility–instead she plans on joining Wellington Phoenix FC – one of New Zealand’s premier club sides as coaching staff member.
Chairman Rob Morrison of Wellington expressed his pleasure at Priestman’s return to soccer, highlighting her period away from the sport and how the club stands behind their decision to welcome her aboard. “We’re really pleased to be able to welcome Bev back to football. She’s had a period of time away, but we understand the circumstances and are really comfortable with this appointment,” he remarked.
Morrison continued to praise Priestman, stating, “Bev is a world-class coach and a top person. There is no doubt that she will bring her winning mentality to the Wellington Phoenix.”
Priestman herself expressed excitement for this opportunity and was prepared to dive headfirst into her role at Wellington Phoenix. “I am beyond ecstatic to join such an ambitious club with world-class facilities, impressive fan support, and such incredible people,” stated Priestman. She further added “I cannot wait to start working here at Phoenix, connecting with colleagues throughout their organization, and meeting our passionate fans! I cannot wait!”
Priestman noted the significance of her return to New Zealand and acknowledged her responsibility in leading the Phoenix, its only professional women’s team, towards something special. “Coming back has been incredible! Watching them perform so beautifully has been breathtaking; now is our turn to represent this country and try our hardest,” concluded Priestman.
