Opta Analyst recently assessed global football leagues, ranking Major League Soccer surprisingly 12th for 2025. This result was unexpected given that its history is littered with legendary figures like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gareth Bale and David Beckham who all competed on American fields before transitioning into team ownership as in Beckham’s case.
While various factors contribute to rankings of American men’s leagues, debate regarding its ability to become one of global football competitions lingers on. Jurgen Klopp is well known as one of the greatest managers ever and currently serves as global soccer director at Red Bull (including New York Red Bulls in his portfolio) where he remains strongly hopeful for its continued growth and future success. He recently provided another vote of confidence by proclaiming himself optimistic for their potential rise to success as part of Red Bull.
Klopp’s assessment offers a glowing endorsement of the league’s current state and its trajectory. “I’m 100% sure, in five years’ time, we will speak completely differently… I can tell you, the quality is really, really good. Good players, a lot of talent, high intensity. I think (MLS) found its spot,” he confidently stated.
Though some MLS fans remain optimistic in Klopp’s optimism, others remain unconvinced and voice their unhappiness on social platforms. One fan noted his professional ties with Red Bull FC as being suspect when considering his impartiality; another commented, joking “Can’t fool us. He’s on MLS payroll so he will praise league!” Another fan made light of promises made but never delivered upon; another pointed out they have repeatedly promised progress: “Lol they have been saying 5 years for 30 years… “
