Manchester United may still be working to refresh their midfield despite recent signings like Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, although these additions increase technical quality and Premier League experience in their squads. Furthermore, Manchester United continues to search for athletic midfielders capable of shielding defences while moving the ball under pressure effectively.
Carlos Baleba, Manu Kone and Adam Wharton have been mentioned as potential targets; however, costs and availability will play an integral part in making a final decision by the club.
Baleba and Koné on Manchester United’s Radar
Insiders close to the football agents’ industry have indicated that Manchester United maintains an interest in Carlos Baleba. The Brighton midfielder is reportedly keen on joining Old Trafford, with preliminary personal terms discussed previously, although no fresh proposal has yet been submitted to Brighton. United have already confirmed the arrivals of Santos and Tielemans, strengthening a midfield that required rebuilding after the departure of Casemiro and an injury to Manuel Ugarte.
Baleba remains an attractive prospect due to his power, mobility, and Premier League experience, but Brighton’s valuation poses a challenge. Meanwhile, enquiries have also been made regarding Roma midfielder Manu Koné, who could command a fee around €60 million. Another candidate is Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, although his expected fee likely makes him a less feasible option.
Why Manu Koné Could Be the Best Fit
While Baleba offers an exciting physical profile, Koné might represent a more pragmatic choice. Santos contributes with ball-winning abilities and versatility at both ends of the pitch, whereas Tielemans provides creativity, passing range, and leadership.
However, the team still lacks a midfielder who can cover large areas quickly, withstand pressing, and drive the team forward with direct carries. Baleba fits this role well but would be a risky investment considering his inconsistent recent season and high price tag.
Kone offers similar energy, experience in top leagues such as Bundesliga and Serie A and international exposure at potentially more reasonable costs; Wharton could improve deep passing but may be unsuitable due to his higher valuation.
Kone provides Manchester United with the ideal combination of quality, affordability and tactical compatibility in their midfield needs. If Brighton were to lower their asking price further they may even become an alternative solution!
