2025 Copa America Femenina tournament that kicked off July 11 in Ecuador and will last through August 2 has been overshadowed by some surprising developments. Expectations were high for this tournament that runs concurrently with UEFA Women’s Euros; but its 10th edition has experienced issues, prompting Brazilian football icon Marta to voice concerns regarding CONMEBOL tournament issues.
On Tuesday morning before Brazil and Bolivia faced off for their second Group B match on Tuesday, images began surfacing online that depicted players from both teams forced to warm-up in cramped conditions at Gonzalo Pozo Ripalda Stadium – as part of tournament organizers’ decision to protect this pitch which sees heavy use during group stages matches.
Marta made clear her disappointment in this competition when discussing it: it had been “long since my last South American tournament, and we were deeply saddened by these circumstances,” the 39-year-old striker noted, noting the inadequate conditions faced by players. While athletes must work hard, tournament officials must demand high levels of organization as well; there was not enough space available for both teams, yet everyone wanted to properly prepare. “Warming up on the pitch wasn’t allowed!” said Marta.
