As US Men’s National Team coach Mauricio Pochettino takes charge, there has been much contention as to who should lead their line as number 9 under him, particularly following Ricardo Pepi’s stellar performances for PSV Eindhoven over Folarin Balogun after injury. With recent performances by both men being at PSV Eindhoven respectively and with both out with injuries at once; now more than ever does Ricardo Pepi have to prove he should become primary striker of his team under Pochettino than ever.
Ricardo Pepi’s impressive performances against Jamaica in both legs of the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal have convinced many that Ricardo Pepi is an obvious pick to lead United in scoring at 2026 World Cup tournament. Former USMNT goalkeeper Tony Meola expressed this opinion by noting while Balogun may be perceived as superior overall player, Pepi is preferable due to current form and team needs; Meola added that consistent playing time may see Pepi become even more effective as striker. Meola said Meola added:
Meola also touched upon the struggles the USMNT has faced with their forwards, suggesting that Pepi’s contributions have been a refreshing change. He expressed hesitation over altering the current setup, given Pepi’s positive performances.
Choosing to bench a player performing well in favor of another is always a risky decision. This sentiment was mirrored in the 2022 World Cup when Fernando Santos’ decision to bench Cristiano Ronaldo was met with skepticism, only to be vindicated by Gonçalo Ramos’s standout hat-trick performance. With Pepi showing solid form and Balogun returning from injury, Pochettino finds himself with a challenging decision to make.
The Striker Dilemma for Pochettino in March
Pochettino will have plenty of time during this international break to consider his forward options, particularly after former coach Gregg Berhalter exposed Balogun and Pepi as players with significant struggles during their USMNT’s disappointing showing at Copa America 2024. Josh Sargent may add another factor as expected fitness may make him eligible to compete in Nations League semifinal. Club-level performances might ultimately determine Pochettino’s selections.
Ricardo Pepi is currently Pochettino’s top selection, contributing six goals and an assist across 11 games at PSV Eindhoven while Balogun, although not as prolific, scored three in six matches – as time progresses, it will become clear whether either Pepi, Balogun, or another emerging talent will lead the USMNT attack under Pochettino’s guidance.
