Elena Rybakina again displayed her skills at the Eisenhower Cup by teaming with American Taylor Fritz to win in mixed doubles at Indian Wells Tennis Garden’s Eisenhower Cup event, defeating Americans Learner Tien and Amanda Anisimova 10-7 for victory – although an unexpected controversy surfaced at trophy presentation time.
At an award ceremony, one man could be seen placing their hand around Rybakina’s waist, prompting much discussion from fans and observers alike. Rybakina appeared uneasy during this momentous encounter which caused an immediate backlash among her supporters; since then however she has addressed and minimized it publicly.
“Nothing really happened. It probably just looked like this, but nothing happened,” Rybakina stated during a press conference. Although the win was a positive lead-up to the Indian Wells Open, the awkward moment after the match somewhat overshadowed her achievement. Questions remain about the identity of the man beside Fritz and Rybakina during the celebration.
It was later revealed that the individual was David Renker, the senior vice president of Eisenhower Health. As Eisenhower Health sponsors the Eisenhower Cup annually, Renker’s presence during the trophy ceremony was part of the event’s sponsorship activities. He has not yet commented on the controversy.
Despite being a charity event rather than a major tournament, the victory held significance for Rybakina as she prepares for a strong performance at the Indian Wells Open. After starting the year impressively by winning the Australian Open twice, her form has dipped slightly in subsequent competitions.
Rybakina’s Performance Following the Australian Open
Rybakina’s next tournament was the Qatar Open, where she entered as one of the favorites. However, she was surprisingly defeated in the quarter-finals by Canadian young talent Victoria Mboko in a closely contested match that ended 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in Mboko’s favor.
The Dubai Championships also proved challenging for Rybakina. In the Round of 16 against Croatia’s Antonia Ružić, she won the first set 7-5 but lost momentum in the second set, which Ružić claimed 6-4. In the third set, Ružić broke Rybakina’s serve early, and the Kazakh player, experiencing physical discomfort, called for medical assistance. Citing nausea and fatigue from poor sleep, Rybakina decided to retire from the match.
While her recent tournaments have been difficult, the Indian Wells Open represents an opportunity for Rybakina to regain form. Despite making it through the Round of 64, her performance against Hailey Baptiste of the USA was inconsistent. After narrowly winning the first set 7-6, Rybakina struggled in the second set, losing 2-6. Though Baptiste did not fully capitalize on break opportunities, Rybakina rallied strongly to take the third set 6-2 and secure the match.
Rybakina acknowledged the challenges presented by slow court conditions that hindered her game, noting “my serves were somewhat rushed due to windy conditions, so my focus was taking one point at a time and not worrying too much about scoring points,” as anything can change quickly in these conditions. I tried my hardest just to stay in the match without tiring out too quickly during subsequent sets, though she conceded she may have lost energy at times during play; overall she felt happy she found her footing again eventually.
Rybakina’s victory has earned her a Round of 32 match against Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine and all eyes will be watching to see whether Rybakina can deliver on her promise and advance to the Last 16 stage at Indian Wells Open.
