Jannik Sinner announced his withdrawal from the Cincinnati Masters due to ongoing knee issues. This comes amid numerous physical obstacles for Sinner this season that had raised serious doubts as to his readiness for US Open. Though Sinner entered Cincinnati event, both himself and medical team decided that his body is currently unfit enough to compete.
Sinner has struggled since his loss at the French Open due to cramps and physical distress, yet made an impressive comeback by successfully defending Wimbledon title after sitting out Canadian Open competition. Although expected to return for Cincinnati Masters ahead of US Open competition, due to knee issues he opted out.
The injury setback is particularly disappointing as Sinner had won the Cincinnati title earlier in 2024, beating Frances Tiafoe in the final. He has consistently shown excellent form at this tournament over the past few years and was anticipated to continue his momentum this season.
With the US Open approaching, Sinner’s focus has shifted towards rest and recovery rather than competition. Missing Cincinnati means losing a significant number of ranking points, as he reached the final last year. Nonetheless, his current lead in the rankings is substantial enough that this withdrawal is unlikely to affect his standing at the top.
Other Notable Withdrawals from Cincinnati
Sinner is not the only top player absent from this year’s Cincinnati Masters. Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion, will also miss the event as he continues to recover from a wrist injury sustained earlier in the year. Initially expected to return in Cincinnati, Alcaraz remains sidelined, casting doubt on his participation in the US Open.
Alexander Bublik has pulled out as well, a decision influenced by personal reasons, including his son’s birthday coinciding with the tournament dates. Holger Rune is another withdrawal; he has been out since October 2023 due to an Achilles injury and is still in the process of regaining full fitness.
From the WTA side, Jasmine Paolini has withdrawn while she recovers from a persistent foot injury. Having reached the Cincinnati final last year, Paolini’s absence will be felt this edition. Victoria Mboko is also sidelined due to a knee injury that caused her to miss Wimbledon and the Toronto Open, diminishing hopes of her playing in New York.
Emma Raducanu will also not compete as she continues her recovery from a stress fracture of the right lower leg – which forced her out of Wimbledon – which has kept her sidelined ever since June. Since that time she has yet to play competitive matches.
Jannik Sinner must ensure his right knee heals properly before competing at the US Open, given his lack of recent hard-court match play and fitness concerns. Therefore, we will have to keep close tabs on his performance over the coming days and weeks.
