Nick Kyrgios Contemplates Retirement with a Heartfelt Note to Thanasi Kokkinakis

Nick Kyrgios noted after his opening-round loss at the 2025 Australian Open that “realism for me doesn’t see myself playing singles again here”, after losing to Brit Jacob Fernley 7-6(3) 6-3 7-6(2) that “it wouldn’t really see myself probably playing singles again here”. While Kyrgios remains optimistic that doubles could provide him with future tennis competition, particularly alongside trusted partners.

After recovering from wrist injuries, Kyrgios made his comeback at the Brisbane International in December 2024 but didn’t progress past the initial rounds in both singles and doubles competition – even with partner Novak Djokovic from Serbia partnering him. Hopes had been high that Kyrgios could captivate home audience at Australia Open this year but early exit has led him to consider that his participation could come to an end at his home major: Kyrgios shared in post match press conference that it wasn’t enjoyable being on court with Djokovic with either partner Djokovic being his partner or not knowing exactly where Kyrgios would hit this ball while not thinking tactically or thinking where was I going with my partner,” Kyrgios shared.

Despite the personal disappointment, Kyrgios is determined to leave a positive mark in the doubles category. As a former Australian Open doubles champion – claiming victory in 2022 with fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis against Max Purcell and Matthew Ebden – Kyrgios looks forward to replicating past successes. An emotional message was shared with Kokkinakis on social media ahead of their match against James Duckworth and Aleksander Vukic, showcasing their camaraderie.

Kokkinakis himself is facing physical challenges, having withdrawn from the Adelaide International due to a shoulder injury. Nonetheless, he is committed to playing alongside Kyrgios, echoing a mutual determination to entertain the Melbourne crowd once more. “Unless we are seriously, seriously hurt…we’re going to try and come out there even if we’re not feeling great,” Kokkinakis stated, highlighting their pact to perform despite adversities.

Though doubles was never their initial focus, winning the AO title changed their mindset drastically. Kokkinakis noted, “it was so much fun… We feel obliged to people that came out… we owe it them some good performances…” This mind shift places emphasis on enjoyment and fan engagement over competitive success.

With Kyrgios’ announcement of retirement, excitement surrounding their doubles performance has skyrocketed. Fans eager to witness whether Kyrgios can conclude his Australian Open journey on an upswing; no doubt this event will capture tennis enthusiasts worldwide!
